How to use the spacebar counter
- Choose a length: 10, 30 or 60 seconds for a timed score, or No limit to simply count presses until you reset.
- Rest a thumb or finger on the spacebar. The timer doesn’t start until your first press.
- Press the spacebar as fast as you can. On a phone or tablet, tap the big box instead.
- When the time is up, read your presses per second, your total, your fastest single second and the chart of each second.
- Press the spacebar again to try to beat your best, or choose another length.
Holding the key down doesn’t count: only separate presses are added. While the counter is open, the spacebar doesn’t scroll the page or press buttons, so use Enter or the mouse for the Reset button.
What people use a spacebar counter for
- A speed challenge: beat your own record or a friend’s, the same idea as a CPS test for mouse clicks.
- Games: many browser and PC games use the spacebar to jump, boost or tap, so a faster and steadier rhythm helps.
- Checking a keyboard: if your spacebar feels sticky, misses presses or types two spaces, a quick round shows whether every press registers once.
How the double-press check works
Inside every key is a switch that closes when you press it. As it wears or collects dust, the contacts can bounce, so one press is sent to the computer as two. On a spacebar, that shows up as double spaces while you type.
The counter notes when the spacebar is released and when it is pressed again. A new press less than 35 milliseconds after a release is faster than anyone can tap, so it is counted as a possible double press. One or two in a long round can happen; many in every round means the key needs attention. The same check runs for every key in the keyboard test.
Spacebar not working properly? Try these fixes
- Clean under the key. Turn the keyboard off or unplug it, turn it upside down and tap it gently, then blow short bursts of compressed air under the spacebar from several angles.
- Check the stabilizers. A long key like the spacebar sits on metal wires at each end. If one end sticks or rattles, the wire may have slipped out of its clip. On many desktop keyboards the keycap pulls straight up so you can reseat it; on laptops, don’t force the key off, because the clips break easily.
- Turn off accessibility features that filter keys. On Windows, open Settings › Accessibility › Keyboard and check that Filter keys is off, because it ignores quick or repeated presses. On a Mac, open System Settings › Accessibility › Keyboard and turn off Slow Keys.
- Rule out software. Try the counter in another browser, and close apps that remap keys or record macros. On Windows, a keyboard driver update from Device Manager can help.
- Try another keyboard. If an external keyboard counts every press correctly, the problem is the original keyboard’s hardware, not your computer.
Tips for a higher score
- Use the thumb you type with, or a fingertip, and keep it touching the key so it only travels as far as it has to.
- Press near the middle of the spacebar. The ends move less evenly, especially on cheaper keyboards.
- Rest your wrist on the desk and keep your hand relaxed; tension slows you down after a few seconds.
- Short rounds measure burst speed and long rounds measure stamina. Watch the chart to see where you slow down.
- Take breaks. Fast, repetitive tapping strains the hand, so stop if it hurts.
Is the spacebar counter private?
Yes. It runs entirely in your browser and only counts the spacebar. It doesn’t store or send any other keys you press, and your best scores stay in this browser’s storage on your device.
Frequently asked questions
Does holding the spacebar down count?
No. When you hold a key, your computer repeats it automatically, which would let anyone reach a huge score without tapping. The counter ignores those repeats and only counts real presses, so every result is a fair one.
What is a good spacebar score?
There is no official average. Comfortable tapping with a thumb usually lands in the single digits per second, and a fast, practised burst can go higher. Speed drops over longer rounds as your hand tires, so compare a 10-second score with other 10-second scores, ideally your own.
Can I use it on a phone or tablet?
Yes. A phone has no spacebar outside a text box, so taps on the big box count as presses instead. If you connect a Bluetooth keyboard, its spacebar works as well.
What does a double-press warning mean?
It means the counter saw the spacebar pressed again less than 35 milliseconds after it was released. That is faster than a person can tap, so one press was probably registered twice. It usually points to dirt under the key or a worn switch. Try the cleaning steps on this page, and use the keyboard test to check whether other keys do the same.
Why does the page not scroll when I press the spacebar?
Normally the spacebar scrolls a web page down. This page turns that off so you can press as fast as you like without losing your place. To scroll, use the mouse wheel, the arrow keys or the scroll bar.
Is my score saved or sent anywhere?
Your best score for each timed length is saved only in this browser so you can try to beat it. Nothing is uploaded, and the page doesn’t record which other keys you press.
