How to use the white screen
- Turn your screen brightness up with your device’s settings or brightness keys.
- Press Full screen or click the white box. The whole screen turns white and the pointer hides after a moment.
- Use ↑ and ↓ to change brightness, or tap the screen for Dimmer, Brighter and Exit buttons.
- Press Esc, or tap and choose Exit, to come back to this page.
What you can use a white screen for
- A light for video calls. Open the page on a second screen, a tablet or a phone beside your camera, angled toward your face. Add a little Warmth to match warm room lights so your skin doesn’t look blue.
- Cleaning your screen. Dust, fingerprints and streaks stand out on white. Wipe with a dry microfiber cloth, then check again.
- Finding dead pixels. A dead pixel shows as a tiny black dot that stays in place when you wipe the screen. For the full check with black and colored screens, use the monitor test.
- Tracing. On a tablet or laptop lying flat, put thin paper over the white screen to trace a drawing. Press lightly: hard pressure can damage a screen.
- Checking for uneven brightness. Dim the room and look for darker corners, yellow tints or bands across the white.
- Showing a solid color. Pick black, gray, red, green, blue or any custom color for photos, lighting effects or a quick color check.
Brightness and warmth
Brightness dims the white from 100% down to 10% without changing your system setting, which helps when full white is too much in a dark room. Warmth takes out blue and some green to give a softer, more yellow light, closer to a household bulb. Color shown gives the exact color code on screen, so you can note settings you like. Your brightness and warmth are remembered in this browser for next time.
On phones and tablets
Android phones and tablets, iPads and computers show the color on the whole screen. On iPhone, Safari currently keeps the address bar for web pages, so the color fills the browser window; turning the phone sideways gives you more white. If your screen locks too quickly, the page asks the browser to keep it on while the color is showing; if that isn’t possible, set a longer auto-lock or screen timeout in your device settings.
Need a dark screen instead? The black screen page starts on black and covers what a black screen is good for.
Is this tool private?
Yes. The color is drawn by your browser and nothing is uploaded. Only your brightness and warmth settings are saved, in this browser.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my white screen look yellow or orange?
A blue-light filter is probably on. Turn off Night Light (Windows), Night Shift and True Tone (Mac, iPhone and iPad) or Eye Comfort / Reading mode (Android) for a pure white. Also check that the Warmth slider on this page is at 0%.
Why doesn’t it go full screen on my iPhone?
At the time of writing, Safari on iPhone only lets videos go full screen, not web pages, so the white fills the browser window instead. Turn the phone sideways and scroll a little to shrink the address bar, or use an iPad, Android phone or computer for a true full screen.
Will my screen turn off while it’s white?
Not if your browser supports keeping the screen on: leave the “Keep the screen on” box checked and the page asks the browser to stop the screen from dimming or locking while the color is showing. Battery saver modes can refuse the request; the page tells you when that happens.
How do I make the white brighter?
The page can only make the screen dimmer than its current setting, not brighter. Raise the brightness in your system settings or with the brightness keys, and turn off auto-brightness so the screen doesn’t dim itself. Keep the Brightness slider here at 100%.
Can a white screen damage my display?
Not on normal monitors and laptops. On OLED screens, such as many phones, some laptops and OLED TVs, showing the same bright image for many hours can add to uneven wear (burn-in) over time, so use a white screen when you need it rather than leaving it on all day.
Is a white screen bad for my eyes?
A bright white screen in a dark room can be glaring and tiring. Lower the Brightness slider, add some Warmth, or turn on a room light. If you use it as a light for video calls, point it at your face from the side or from slightly above rather than staring into it.
